An interesting background of the Terracotta Army is that it was found by local villagers while drilling a water well in Mount Li in March 1974. Fragments of terracotta warriors and many bronze weapons were discovered upon burrowing, which prompted the State Administration of Cultural Heritage to send a team of conservation experts and archaeologists to perform a full-scale excavation.

These terracotta warriors were built during the first Qin Dynasty, under Shihuangdi’s rule. Shihuangdi’s terracotta warriors represent his ability to control the unified people of China and attempt to maintain and recreate that empire in the afterlife. A noteworthy testament of his legend was thus created: a mausoleum complex of life-sized sculptures of terracotta soldiers, horses, and chariots.

Today, there are over 6,000 terracotta warriors and horses in the museum. These ‘warriors’ are lined up in a well-organized group pose, as if they are ready for battle. The view is spectacular, especially from afar. Each soldier and its horse are life-like. This remarkable tourist attraction not only gives goosebumps upon sight, but informs visitors how well the country has been fought by brave and patriotic warriors even in the olden times.
